The primary role of the Munsee Delaware Education Department is to ensure our children and youth have access to a quality education and receive all of the necessary supports to achieve academic success. Their success will enable the Munsee Delaware Nation to attain economic prosperity and self-sufficiency, once again.
The Munsee Delaware Education Department is governed by the community, through the re-establishment of the Nation’s Education Committee. There are approximately 40 elementary and secondary school students from the Munsee Delaware Nation who attend several schools in the London region. We provide the school bus transportation to most of the schools that our children attend.
The Education Coordinator’s role is multi-faceted. They are responsible for the administration of the education budget as well as play a role in negotiating tuition agreements with the Thames Valley District School Board. The Munsee Delaware Nation also contributes funding towards the costs associated with accommodating our special needs students. It’s the coordinator’s role to ensure the schools are meeting the needs of all of our students.
Besides administering the Education program for the Education Department, the Munsee Delaware Education Coordinator also provides information, guidance and support to students and their families on a daily basis. Additionally, the Coordinator works closely with teachers, principals, school board officials, Chief and Council, and the Indigenous Education Coalition to ensure they meet the academic, social, cultural and athletic needs of all Munsee Delaware students.
